Garage Band

I was not so enamored with this graphic novel, something that I can t believe I m saying since I usually enjoy them. The art itself wasn t bad, but the story was underdeveloped since nothing happened, or perhaps it was over developed since the entire story only dealt with the construction of the characters. I suppose that boys might find this book with its charms, while I on the other hand found it to be dull, and at times a bit offensive. An insane guy, a skin head, a push over, and a regular guy could make for an interesting band, but given the little there was about them together and the band itself there isn t much to go on. Since this is the first book of the series I dearly hope that the future books will deal more with the band itself and its successes or failures, but in the mean time I am just disappointed.

Beauty Shop for Rent

Beauty Shop for Rent is a wonderful book, I know it sounds cliche but I couldn't put it down. I love all the characters, especially the Gray Widows, who are absolutely hilarious. I don't want to give a summary over and above the back of the book type, you should get it just as I did, I'm sure you'll love it. Abby Garner comes from a bad tradition of females in her family, she is determined to break the mold and earn a millon dollars by the time she turns thirty-five. Of course all sorts of problems show up along the way. No go and read, you know you want to. yes

Nightsong The Legend of Orpheus and Eurydice

I hope that at some point all of you have been exposed to some Greek and Roman mythology, it would make my job much easier. Nightsong is a retelling of the classic story of Orpheus and Eurydice (see title) Well, Orpheus is in love with Eurydice, and visa versa, so when Eurydice dies Orpheus tries to get her back from the grave. I loved the storytelling in this book, it embroiders the original tale, and leaves plenty of useful hints for those not familiar with mythology (other than a vauge memory of the story, like me) which makes it much easier for modern readers. I really liked it, I think just about anybody who likes adventure, romance, and magic would. yes

The Plain Janes

I loved The Plain Janes, it is a fabulous graphic novel with compelling characters and a superb plot. This book is about a group of girls who share one thing in common, and one thing only, the name Jane, just spelled differently. Yet with four distinctly different girls comes a wonderful friendship. The main Jane, or the main character, comes up with the idea to create random acts of art in the secret club called P.L.A.I.N., or People Loving Art In Neighborhoods. From there the trouble, as well as fun, escalates to new proportions but a wicked good story comes from it all. I would highly suggest this book to someone who enjoys graphic novels, or even just a good short read.

Castellucci, Cecil  and Jim Rugg. The Plain Janes. DC Comics. This graphic novel was quick, but I loved the story line and the creativity. Jane and her group of friends made of reject from around the school, commit acts of art around the neighborhood at night. It help the friends to see beauty in life. But the police and parents suspect the acts of art as threats from a terrorist group. The only thing I didn't like was how Jane never came out about her being the one how did the acts of art. Nominate?  Yes. 4Q. 4P. Kara D. 13

Castellucci, Cecil and Jim Rugg The Plain Janes The Plain Janes has a great message to share with the world; there is beauty everywhere, if you just know how to find it. So, as a message-deliverer, Janes is great. As just a book, however, it has some failings. While the characters practically jumped off the page and the plot kept me intrigued, the ending left me feeling abandoned. I kept flippint the last pages and thinking to mysef, Where’s the rest of the book?! Even five more pages would have been enough to really wrap things up. Despite the lemming ending (it just jumps off a cliff and plunges into nothing) I liked this book. I didn’t love it, but I liked it. It said a lot in under 150 pages, and it was easy to relate to the characters. All in all, 3.5 out of 5 stars. Emily, 18

The Princess and the Hound

OK, this is a basic storyline, Prince meets Princess, falls in love, etc. but with a ton of suprising twists. Like animal magic, or, wait, can't tell you that one. I loved this book. George and Beatrice, prince and princess, really seemed real to me, along with all the secondary characters. And the complex story actually seemed possible. That's the best thing you can find in a book, a new place where you can live for just a while. Only the best books can do that. yes

Harrison, Mette Ivie The Princess and the Hound HarperCollins Prince George is betrothed to Princess Beatrice of Kendel, whom his country was recently at war. This is the story of they're having to learn how to love each other. A tale of outcasts, with interesting plot twists, that will shock and confuse you. yes

The Remarkable Life and Times of Eliza Rose

'Eliza Rose' was an okay story, but definantly not my favorite. It just didn't really appeal to me, except the era, which was set in the 1700's in Europe. I couldn't find myself relating to Eliza at all, and I hated her desisions in parts. But, the writing was very good, just not for me. So, I think that Mary Hooper will be a well loved author someday, but you either love her books, or hate them.

Summer Intern

This is not your typical chic-flick book. Deceiving as the cover may be, the main character is not a prep, ditz, etc. Far from the truth in this case. Kira is hard working, funny, nice, and above all, determined. She is everybody s friend that they knew from way back when, and is also believable. She makes mistakes like every one else, and has bad days like everyone else. Daphne is a new kind of villain. She is easy to hate, but also easy to understand. Which of course just makes you hate her more, but in a deeper, more intricate way. I can see this being a great summer read, as that's when people need a bit of drama.
yes I'm not really into fashion, or modeling, so the cover kind of put me off, in till I got to the first page anyway.

Wildwood Dancing

Wildwood Dancing was an AMAZING book. It is definantly in my top ten for this year. Wildwood Dancing tells the story of 5 sisters who have a portal in there room that transports them to the 'other world'. Every night of the full moon, the sisters enter this magical realm and dance all night, and then return at dawn, there feet aching from the dance. But then, a mysterious group of people, The Night People, enter the Wildwood, and nothing will ever be the same again. This story held me until the very last page. I want a sequel!!! It had so many differant genres, mainly fantasy, but twists of romance, historical fiction, and a little bit of science fiction. I really enjoyed this book, and I encourage everyone to read it.

This is not the kind of book I usually read. That being said, I was surprised to find myself liking it. You can't help but like Twin Leon and Twin Luke however. All Luke's thoughts are true to his personality and fun to read. His frankness about his white relatives, how that came to be, and Filthy Frank is interesting as well as refreshing to read. Joe Nasty reminded me of my older sibling, and all the fights I have had with her. Though this book might be for slightly older readers, say 11-up, it will entertain anyone lucky enough to pick it up. yes   4 4 Logan 13

If the person you thought had been your sister, for your whole life, turned out to be your Mom, what would you do? Meg, our heroine, decides to take of to New York City to find her Dad. Trying to cope with a new school, new friend, and a family she never knew she had is difficult enough, but add in... nope, can't tell you that, you'll have to read the book. Now I absolutely loved this book. It was funny, real, and the character are like people you could meet on Main Street. The plot was well done as well, which is a must for a good review from me. I would really recommend this to anyone who came within speaking distance of me for the next month and a half. (Even though it's kind of a girly book) yes

A Portrait of Pia

Honestly I could not get past the first thirty pages of this book. For me, this is unusual, I'll read anything most of the time. This book though, I don't know. I didn't connect with the caracters, or get pulled into the plot or anything. There was absolutely no reason to keep reading, so I stoped. That's really all I can say, except the books about a girl named Pia. no

A True and Faithful Narrative

(not eligible)

Farrar Straus Giroux Meg is a writer, but her father does not consider writing to be a proper hobby or career for women, resulting in her father being the person who Meg most wants to impress with her skill. Meg also tries to decide which of two men she wants to court. Will is a perfect example of an Englishman and an apprentice to a bookseller. Edward was captured by pirates sold into slavery and ransomed and wants Meg to form his experiences into a book.
I would recommend this book. There is a romance aspect in this book, but the plot line about Edward being a slave and being ransomed also in intriguing.

Sturtevant, Katherine A True and Faithful Narrative Farrar, Straus and Giroux 2006 'A True and Faithful Narrative' was an excellent book. It is set in London in the year 1680, which was the perfect setting for this book's events. The main character is Meg, a sixteen-year-old bookseller's daughter. As anyone who grows up around books, Meg adores reading, and to her father's contemt, she has developed a flair for writing as well. One day, a friend (his name is Edward) comes to Meg and asks to court her, and she answers his request with a thoughless jest, not thinking much of what may come to pass. But then, Edward's ship is captured by pirates, and Meg feels it is her fault for joking so carelessly. Determined to save Edward, Meg uses her quick wit, kindness, and her writing skills that everyone seems to oppose to raise the money for Edward's ransom, along with her father's apprentance, Will. Through many trials, Meg learns many new things about herself and others, that change her life forever. This book had many differant generes, so almost anyone could pick it up and enjoy it. I think I enjoyed this book mostly because Meg reminds me of myself in a few parts, and it's fun to be reading and say, 'that's exactly what I would do. It's a good story. You won't be disappointed. Flora Segunda Being the Magickal Mishaps of a Girl of Spirit, Her Glass-Gaxing Sidekick, Two Ominous Butlers (One Blue), A House WIth Eleven Thousand Rooms, and a Red Dog

To say Flora Segunda takes place in a world different from our own is an understatement. Though the names may be similar (Calif, the Pacifica Ocean) it is nothing like it. The first few pages give an excellent introduction into the world of Flora Frydraaca, but as I'm to lazy to type it out, you'll have to read it. I will say however, that anyone who is even remotely attracted to adventure fantasy ABSOLUTELY HAS TO READ THIS BOOK!!! Ok, now why, the character are ardorable, or hateable, or whatever they need to be, the plot is fantastic, the suspense superb, the otherworldliness evident where it needs to be, the danger seemed real, the emotions were clear. Basically, it's a readers dream. yes Can I pretty, pretty, please have this book? (grovel, beg, etc.) Also this is my seventh review this week were is every one else 5 5 Alice 13
WIlce, Sabeau S. Flora Segunda
This book kind of started out slow, but once it started up, man! It was a very interisting story about a novice magic user, Flora Segunda, who wants to be a ranger. The only thing I did not like was how she kept quoting this comic book, and supposedly real character called Nini Mo. Also, there is a GREAT twist in the last 4 sentinces that will keep you thinking for a long time. My favorite part was in the end, before the twist, when one of the most unexpected things happens. yes I would like a copy of this book 5 4 Lewis 13
